I decided when I was 12 that I was going to be a novelist and I dedicated all my education to that goal. I got a BA in creative writing and an MA in professional creative writing.

I submitted stories to magazines, I wrote my first novel, I querried agents and publishers. In the late 90s I began self-publishing. I loved the control over my work that it gave me.

But it was when the Kindle came out that everything changed for me.

In 2009 I put my novel (W)hole up on Amazon and along with authors like Joanna Penn, Hugh Howey, and David Gaughran, we started figuring out new ways to bring readers to our work.

I regret to say that I didn't stick with writing. I was too slow of a writer to make a living at it. But the process of self-publishing (and eventually publishing books from my friends as well) opened my eyes up to how much I liked marketing.

I know, writers aren't supposed to like marketing.

But to me I saw how marketing your work is like telling a great story and bringing people on a journey. Eventually I discovered a strange gift for sales funnels and digital marketing.

Based on that I have been able to continue to sell (W)hole without any promotion for the last 13 years.
